Three-Point Turn: Complete Guide

This step-by-step guide will teach you how to perform a three-point turn (sometimes called a turn in the road) correctly for your UK driving test.

Important Safety Note

Only attempt a three-point turn when absolutely necessary and when the road is quiet. Avoid doing this manoeuvre on busy roads, near junctions, or where there are parked vehicles.

1 Initial Preparation

  • Find a straight, quiet road with good visibility in both directions
  • Check your mirrors and signal left to pull over
  • Stop about half a metre from the kerb with your wheels straight
  • Apply the handbrake and select first gear (manual) or drive (automatic)

2 First Point - Turn Right

  • Check all around the vehicle - mirrors and both blind spots
  • When safe, release the handbrake and move forward slowly
  • Turn the steering wheel quickly to the right as you move off
  • Stop when you're at about a 45-degree angle to the kerb
  • Check for traffic before continuing

3 Second Point - Reverse Left

  • Select reverse gear and check all around again
  • Slowly reverse while turning the steering wheel to the left
  • Use your mirrors and look over your left shoulder
  • Stop when you're close to the opposite kerb (about half a metre away)
  • Check the front of your car has cleared the original side

4 Third Point - Drive Right

  • Select first gear and check all around once more
  • Turn the steering wheel to the right and move forward
  • Aim to finish parallel to and about half a metre from the kerb
  • Straighten your wheels as you complete the turn
  • Check your final position in the mirrors
