Learner Driver Guide: Hill Start
Mastering hill starts is essential for safe driving. Follow these steps to perform a perfect hill start every time.
Step 1: Approach and Stop
As you approach the hill, maintain a steady speed. When you need to stop, apply the footbrake firmly and bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
Step 2: Apply the Handbrake
Once stopped, apply the handbrake (parking brake) to secure the vehicle. Keep your foot on the footbrake while you do this.
Step 3: Find the Biting Point
Press the clutch pedal fully down and select first gear. Slowly raise the clutch pedal until you feel the biting point (the engine note will change slightly).
Step 4: Add Accelerator
While maintaining the clutch at the biting point, gently press the accelerator until the revs reach about 1500-2000 RPM.
Step 5: Release the Handbrake
Check your mirrors and blind spots. When safe to move, release the handbrake while simultaneously maintaining the biting point and accelerator position.
Step 6: Move Off Smoothly
As the vehicle begins to move, gradually release the clutch fully while smoothly increasing accelerator pressure to maintain momentum up the hill.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Releasing the handbrake too quickly
- Not finding the biting point before releasing the handbrake
- Using too much accelerator and causing wheel spin
- Stalling due to insufficient revs when releasing the clutch
Remember: Practice makes perfect. Find a quiet hill to practice these steps until you feel confident.
