UK Parking: Right to Left manoeuvre
This comprehensive guide will walk you through the process of parking on the right-hand side of the road and then moving back to the left-hand side, as required in UK driving tests.
1 Initial Approach
- Identify a safe and legal place to pull over on the right-hand side
- Check your mirrors and signal your intention to pull over to the right
- Ensure there are no parking restrictions or obstructions
- Approach at a controlled speed, about 1-2 car lengths from the kerb
2 Parking on the Right
- When safe, steer smoothly to the right to bring your vehicle parallel to the kerb
- Aim to be within 30-45cm of the kerb
- Straighten your wheels as you come to a stop
- Apply the handbrake and select neutral (manual) or park (automatic)
3 Preparing to Rejoin
- Before moving off, check all around the vehicle:
- Left blind spot
- Mirrors
- Right blind spot
- Oncoming traffic
- Select first gear (manual) or drive (automatic)
- Release the handbrake
4 Moving Off to the Left
- Signal to the left in good time
- Find a safe gap in traffic - remember traffic will be approaching from both directions
- Check blind spots again immediately before moving
- Move off smoothly, steering progressively to the left
5 Positioning on the Left
- Aim to be about 1 meter from the left-hand kerb initially
- Once moving, check your left mirror and adjust position if needed
- Accelerate to a safe speed for the road
- Cancel your left signal once properly established on the left
Essential Tips for This manoeuvre

- ✅ Signal clearly and in good time so other road users understand your intentions
- ✅ Control your speed - slow and controlled movements are key
- ✅ Practice observation - mirror checks should become automatic
- ✅ Choose your location carefully - avoid busy roads when learning
